Seizure Disorders

Involve periodic disturbances of the brain's electrical activity, resulting in some degree of temporary brain dysfunction

Self-advocacy

Individually or in groups (preferably both), people with intellectual disability speak or act on behalf of themselves or others or on behalf of issues that affect people with disabilities (Adapted from Williams & Shoultz, 1984)

Self-determination

A combination of skills, knowledge and beliefs that enable a person to engage in goal-directed, self-regulated, autonomous behavior; an understanding of one’s strengths and limitations together with a belief in oneself as capable and effective are essential to self-determination

Shared Values

The values that shape the way we define, measure and elicit feedback about quality of life and quality of services

Shared Values Alignment®

CQL strategy which determines whether organizational values are consistent and congruent

Social Capital

The collective value of all "social networks" [who people know] and the inclinations that arise from these networks to do things for each other

Social Capital Index®

Tool for organizations and systems to measure their social capital and determine what actions are needed to build social capital networks, or focus attention on community factors such as education, transportation, employment, health care and housing that are impacted by the presence or absence of social capital

Supported Living Arrangement (SLA)

An individually tailored set of supports that assists a person to live in their own home

Supported Work

Assistance provided for a person to work in a competitive wage job in the community

Supports

The range of assistance, training, settings, equipment or care that enable an individual to live as independently as possible

Syndrome

A medical term for a condition in which there is a collection of signs and symptoms recognizable by a doctor's exam; individuals with a syndrome may not have all of its associated signs and symptoms, but they must have enough to be considered "diagnostic"

Systems Advocacy

The concerted action to change policies, rules or laws which determine how services are provided; effort to change system of services in the community, such as school system or transportation system; also includes legislative advocacy

Systems Change

The process of improving the capacity of services to work with many sectors to improve the quality of life for all people in a community
